Tips for a smooth museum visit
We want everyone to enjoy a safe and pleasant visit to the museum. These simple guidelines help protect our shared cultural heritage and make sure everyone has a good experience.
During your visit
- The museum is a shared space for everyone. Please be considerate of other visitors, behave safely and respect the museum and its surroundings.
- Avoid anything that may disturb other visitors or put anyone’s safety at risk, such as running or climbing.
- Please follow signs and staff instructions. This helps ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for everyone.
- Please treat the museum’s buildings, furnishings and other property with care.
- The museum is monitored by CCTV to help keep visitors and the museum safe.
Children and families
- Children must always be supervised by their accompanying adults or a guardian.
- Baby changing facilities are available in the museum toilets.
Exhibitions and museum spaces
- Please do not touch the exhibits unless they are clearly marked as hands-on.
- We aim to make the museum as accessible as possible. Our staff are happy to help if you need assistance.
- Large bags, umbrellas and long items can be left in the designated storage areas.
- Please use the bins provided for your rubbish.
- Shoes with metal studs are not permitted inside the museum, as they damage the floors.
Food and drink
- Food and drink are not permitted in the exhibition galleries. You are welcome to bring a refillable water bottle with a secure lid.
- Alcohol and other intoxicating substances are not permitted in the museum unless they are part of a pre-arranged event.
- Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes or vapes are not permitted inside the museum.
Pets
- Pets are not allowed in the museum.
- Assistance dogs and other trained assistance animals are welcome.
Photography and filming
- You are welcome to take photographs and videos for personal use.
- Please be considerate of other visitors and avoid disrupting the museum while taking photographs or filming.
- Some restrictions apply, including the use of flash, tripods, filming guided tours and drone photography.
- Please ask permission before photographing or filming staff or other visitors.
- If you would like to carry out commercial or large-scale photography or filming, please speak to a member of staff.
Groups and guided tours
- Guided tours for groups must be booked in advance.
- We also ask school groups and other self-guided groups to let us know in advance if they are planning to visit.
- During guided tours, please follow your guide’s instructions to help ensure an enjoyable visit for everyone.
