Accessibility

Accessible access to Turku Castle during renovation of the streets around the harbour

Accessible access to the castle has been arranged for cars via Nuottasaarenkatu to Satamakatu, from where a gravel road turns just before the construction site up to the western gate, which is on the side of the castle that faces the harbour. There is a sign at the beginning of the gravel road with the text ”Huolto- ja pelastusliikenne” (Maintenance and rescue traffic). There are two accessible parking spaces next to the western gate.

If your car is parked in parking spaces close to Turku Castle, the trail to the accessible entrance to western tower passes through Linnanpuisto park. It should be noted that there is a fairly steep climb by the castle, which may be difficult, for example, when moving by wheelchair.

There is an invitation bell to the ticket office at the end of the ramp in the courtyard of the main castle. The staff will direct you to the elevator.

Turku Castle was originally built in the Middle Ages as a defensive fortress, and its historical architecture is still evident in its structure today. The courtyard is paved with uneven natural stones, the stairs are steep, and doorways can be narrow. The interior is often dimly lit, with a maze-like layout and numerous level changes. Unfortunately, not all areas are wheelchair accessible due to these level differences. However, we are continually working to improve accessibility.

The accessible route leads through the lower level of the West Tower to the inner courtyard, where the paving has been levelled for easier movement. A ramp provides access to a lift that takes visitors to the Great Hall on the 2nd floor and the Castle Church on the 3rd floor. From the church, you can also access the sacristy.

Please note

  • Unfortunately, pushchairs cannot be used to navigate the museum.
  • If you have mobility challenges, we recommend bringing a companion to assist you. Entry for companions is free of charge.
  • Visitors are welcome to explore the castle freely with a guide dog.
  • We can arrange guided tours tailored for special groups, including tours in simplified language.
  • At the ticket desk, you can request an audio guide, which provides information about rooms that are not wheelchair accessible. You can also access the audio guide on your own device using the link found at the bottom of this page.
  • During winter, the accessible entrance at the West Tower may be closed for safety reasons if heavy snow accumulates. Similarly, summer events, such as music festivals in the Castle Park, may temporarily affect the use of this entrance.
