Artist Ismo Kajander’s work Memorial to the Turku Civil War Prison Camp ‘535’ marks the site where a Civil War prison camp once stood. At its largest, the camp held approximately 3,300 prisoners, more than one hundred of whom were executed or died of disease.

The rusting iron cross, whose red colour evokes blood, is attached to a rocky outcrop as though it were sinking into the stone. This can be interpreted as a symbol of how historical events leave indelible traces in the land and memory of a place.

Unlike figurative and idealised heroic statues, the work derives its expression and meaning from its message and subject matter, as well as from the anonymity of those it commemorates.
