Ehojoki Aarne: Turku War Veterans' Statue

Turku War Veterans’ Statue

Ehojoki Aarne

1992 grey granite

Turun kaupungin taidekokoelma

Samppalinnanpuisto

This sculpture honouring war veterans was financed through a national fundraising campaign. The memorial was created by architect Aarne Ehojoki (1913–1998), who designed several well-known buildings in Turku. Ehojoki also designed the pedestal for the bust of Marshal C. G. E. Mannerheim in Helsinki and the steps forming part of the monument opposite Mikaelinkirkko Church.

The oak leaf attached to the granite pillar is a symbol of the veterans of Finland’s most recent wars. The oak has traditionally been regarded as a symbol of endurance and strength.
