Mäkinen Viljo: The Boys from Portsa

The Boys from Portsa

Mäkinen Viljo

1972 bronze

Turun kaupungin taidekokoelma

Puutarhakatu 34

The Boys from Portsa depicts two grammar-school boys from the early 20th century. The boys are shown in full motion, running forwards.

The work celebrates the Port Arthur district, one of Turku’s best-preserved wooden-house neighbourhoods and now a protected area of cultural and historical significance. The work of Viljo Mäkinen, who worked as a ceramic artist at the Kupittaan Savi manufactory, is characterised by a humorous style and warmly depicted human and animal figures.
