Artist Maaria Wirkkala’s three-part work Shred of Knowledge is a memorial to the nearby Old Academy Building and its successors, today’s knowledge-seeking researchers.

Emphasising the immaterial and referring to several different historical layers, the memorial consists of a bronze ring installed at ground level and heated from below, a light shining from the window of a researcher’s room on the upper floor of the Old Academy Building, and a sound and video projection on the wall of the Governor’s Storehouse. The projected material is based on images of students who have passed through the university’s entrance hall during the day.
