Portuguese artist Vhils drew the visual language of Remains from Turku’s maritime history.
The work, which is six metres high and more than five metres wide, resembles the bow of a ship. Portraits of Turku-born shipbuilders have been cut from stainless steel and incorporated into its weathered exterior. Inside the work, visitors can sit down and view images illustrating the history of shipbuilding and harbour activities in Turku.
During Turku’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2011, the Turku 2011 Foundation commissioned the work and donated it to the Turku City Art Collection. It was unveiled at its original location in the courtyard of Forum Marinum in 2011.
In spring 2016, the work was moved to its current location in the Telakkaranta district.
