The cycle of life is expressed in the work through both the plantings, which change with the seasons, and the silhouetted human figures. The artwork and the birch trees planted beside it soften the transition in scale between the courtyard and the massive hospital building.

The artist intended to create a harmonious whole, both in terms of the landscape and its content, that changes with the seasons and the passing years.

On one side, the silhouettes are made of mirror-polished steel and positioned to create an illusion of transparency. On the other side, the figures are made of weathered Corten steel. Hospital patients and staff modelled for the figures, which represent three stages of life: childhood, adulthood and old age.
