Mäntynen Jussi: Cranes at the Well

Cranes at the Well

Mäntynen Jussi

1949 bronze

Turun kaupungin taidekokoelma

TYKS Mäntymäen sairaala

The artist and professor Jussi Mäntynen originally donated this work to the City of Turku as a plaster sculpture. It was later cast in bronze and transformed into a fountain sculpture depicting three cranes and installed in front of the then city hospital.

Captured in dramatic movement, the cranes proudly stretch their necks upwards.

Mäntynen, who also worked as a conservator, studied animal anatomy and species-specific behaviour in depth. His sculptures depicting swans and cranes have been interpreted as expressions of post-war grief and the search for inner peace, as well as reflections of the homesickness he experienced during his years in Sweden.
