Yli-Maarian monitoimitalo

Jani Rättyä’s sculpture Capsule rests on a rocky outcrop beside the community centre in Yli-Maaria. The work takes its form from a spruce cone, but its large size, metal construction and internal lighting make it resemble a futuristic technological device, almost like a spacecraft.

The cone shape refers to the history of play. Cones can be used to make animals and many other figures. A cone is also a capsule in itself, containing the plant’s seeds and DNA. When it opens, it spreads new life into its surroundings.

The work is made of Corten steel, also known as weathering steel. When exposed to oxygen and moisture, the surface of this type of steel develops an oxide layer that protects the material from deeper corrosion. This gives the steel its brownish-orange rust colour, which varies according to the humidity.
