A kindly elderly woman with a cat nestled in the folds of her skirt greets passers-by outside an office on Hämeenkatu street.

Viljo Mäkinen, who studied and lived in Turku, often depicted ordinary people rather than prominent public figures. Humour and warmly and affectionately portrayed people and animals are typical features of Mäkinen’s works. The artist also worked as a ceramic artist at the ceramics manufacturer Kupittaan Savi.
