Henrik Gabriel Porthan (1739–1804) was a distinguished scholar who promoted Finnish national consciousness and was a leading authority on Finland’s history, culture and geography. The monument created in his honour by artist Carl Eneas Sjöstrand during the period of Russian rule was Finland’s first memorial to be financed through a public fundraising campaign.

In accordance with 19th-century artistic ideals, Sjöstrand’s work follows an iconographic programme illustrating Porthan’s life and achievements. The reliefs on the pedestal feature classical allegorical figures symbolising science and history, as well as several of Porthan’s students and other cultural figures of the period.
