Governor-General of Finland Per Brahe (1602–1680) arrived at Turku Castle in 1637, marking the beginning of the period known as the Count’s Era, which became renowned for its good governance. Among other achievements, the period saw the establishment of the Royal Academy of Turku and several new towns. Runeberg depicted Brahe as a self-assured ruler.

Brahe’s famous words are engraved on the pedestal: “I was well satisfied with the country, and the country with me.”

Walter Runeberg’s work was characterised by a classical style, although his later production acquired more realistic features. The sculptor’s father was J. L. Runeberg, known as Finland’s national poet.
