Located beside an exercise trail in the cultural landscape of Koroinen, the sculptural group provides a place for both people and their pets to rest. Visitors are usually discouraged from touching works of art, but anyone taking a break from their run can stretch out against Peltola’s sculptural group or sit down on the bone to rest.
The work plays with scale. The stylised dog kennel carved from diabase is comically small compared with the three-metre-long granite bone beside it. The subdued colour palette of the stone, with its polished surfaces and clearly defined forms, contrasts with the lush surrounding greenery.
Peltola graduated from the Kankaanpää Art School in 1998. His work includes stone, bronze and wooden sculptures, as well as works in mixed media, and is characterised by warm humour. Kennel and a Hard Bone was also created with tongue firmly in cheek, and its title reflects the verbal playfulness typical of the artist.
The work was produced as part of the Cultural Exercise Central Park project during Turku’s year as European Capital of Culture. The project sought to promote the physical, psychological and social well-being of city residents and to develop the environment surrounding the River Aura.
