Andersson Jan-Erik: The Rainbow’s Treasure

The Rainbow’s Treasure

Andersson Jan-Erik

2007 24 lampposts, 2 pedestrian bridges

Turun kaupungin taidekokoelma

The environmental artwork in Turku Science Park consists of two pedestrian and cycle bridges and 24 lighting columns. Created by Turku-born artist Jan-Erik Andersson, the work combines practical functionality with strong sculptural expression. Atop the rainbow-coloured streetlights, wind-powered scientists spin while juggling the fundamental building blocks of cell biology.

One bridge is decorated with hearts, while the other features a large spade digging the secret of the rainbow from the open landscape. Just as a rainbow symbolise the search for a distant and perhaps unattainable treasure, the true treasure may be love or the knowledge discovered through science, including cell biology, in the hidden world of cells.
