Artist Kimmo Ojaniemi’s work The Pyramid of Knowledge consists of an above-ground and an underground part. Older work machines donated by Turku’s twin city Gothenburg during the years of post-war scarcity have been cleaned, varnished and placed below ground beneath glass. The above-ground section consists of four pillars supporting a pyramid-shaped roof.

The work honours and expresses gratitude for the past as the foundation of the present. The machines, which were important at the time of the donation, have been placed underground as though they were archaeological discoveries that had been excavated and put on display.

The pyramid shape can be interpreted as a reference to the advanced civilisation of ancient Egypt, which is often regarded as one of the cradles of modern civilisation.
