Myllyahteen tunneli

Artist Kimmo Ojaniemi’s light artwork Gaia’s Eye is embedded in a concrete wall inside the rock along the wall of Myllytunneli tunnel.

The work is based on biochemist James Lovelock’s Gaia hypothesis, according to which the biosphere functions as a self-regulating system capable of affecting the conditions for life on Earth.

In Greek mythology, Gaia is the goddess and guardian spirit of the Earth. Through his work, Ojaniemi draws attention to the relationship between humanity and nature. The cars travelling through the tunnel, which was blasted and constructed inside the rock, are therefore symbolically watched over by an eye representing the forces of nature.
