Sculptor Terho Sakki’s bronze sculpture Muses is a memorial to poet and literary scholar V. A. Koskenniemi, who served for many years as a professor and later as Rector of the University of Turku.

In this memorial to a cultural figure who admired the spirit of ancient mythology, the female bodies without heads or limbs, known as torsos, refer to Hellenistic sculptures that have played an important role in art history and have been damaged over time.

The work presents the Muses, the ancient guardian goddesses of the arts and sciences, in a modernist style. The Muses are also known as symbols of creative inspiration. A twin version of the memorial, Merikoski Muses, is located in Oulu.
