This bronze portrait is a study created by sculptor Veikko Leppänen in 1959 for the equestrian statue of C. G. E. Mannerheim in Helsinki. Architect Aarne Ehojoki designed the granite pedestal and stone steps.

The statue was unveiled on 4 August 1994, 50 years after Parliament elected C. G. E. Mannerheim President of the Republic on 4 August 1944.
