In 1968, the sculpture Welders was installed on the slope outside vocational school Turun teknillinen ammattioppilaitos. The work reflects the school’s field of education at the time through the silhouette of a copper figure engrossed in welding. The work’s theme is expressed not only through its subject but also through its method of production.

Viljo Mäkinen was a Turku-based sculptor, painter and draughtsman who also worked as a ceramic artist at the ceramics manufacturer Kupittaan Savi.
