Into Saxelin’s relief Children at Play depicts different areas of culture and economic life through allegory. The ten child figures, depicted in pairs, represent art, hunting and agriculture, trade and handicrafts, and fishing and seafaring. The children hold symbols representing their respective themes.

As a sculptor, Saxelin’s style was closely aligned with Classicism, and he often depicted children and women in his works.
